Everett McKinley Dirksen Awards for Distinguished Reporting of Congress
Applications-Invited

Criteria and Application Instructions

The Everett McKinley Dirksen Awards for Distinguished Reporting of Congress carry prizes of $5,000 each to the winning print and broadcast journalists.  The deadline for 2009 entries will be 5 pm Monday, October 5, 2009.

Entries will be judged on how well they covered the workings of the Congress as a whole, or helped illuminate the actions of elected officials or congressional staff, or described the workings of congressional policies. The articles or tapes must have been published or broadcast in Sept.1, 2008 - Sept.1, 2009.

Applicants must submit six complete packets to the Foundation. Each packet must contain the following:

  • Entry form (download)
  • Three articles, or three broadcast pieces on VHS tape, CD, or DVD, focused on coverage of the U.S. Congress, as described above
  • Support letter from an editor or supervisor
  • A brief bio
The award was created in 1980 in honor of the late Republican Senator from Illinois, Everett McKinley Dirksen. The National Press Foundation currently administers the awards, which are funded by a grant from The Freedom Forum. Representatives from each organization will serve as judges.

The Dirksen award will be presented along with other major awards in U.S. journalism at the National Press Foundation's Annual Awards Dinner. Address applications to:
