Selected by the NPF Board

Ron Royhab, 2005 Recipient

Ron Royhab, 2005 Recipient

Ron Royhab, executive editor and vice president of The Blade in Toledo, Ohio, has overseen The Blade's investigation of Ohio's coin scandal. The Blade was the first paper to report on the coin investment scandal that has mushroomed to become the largest political scandal in the nation and the largest in Ohio history. The governor has become the first Ohio governor to plead guilty to a criminal offense.

Royhab also oversaw the investigative team that won the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Reporting for its series about an elite fighting unit called Tiger Force that committed atrocities during the Vietnam war.

Royhab spent more than 20 years with Scripps Howard Newspapers in various reporting and editing positions before joining the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette as an associate editor when The Pittsburgh Press was sold to Blade Communications (now Block Communications) in 1993. He was named managing editor of The Blade later that year, promoted to executive editor in 1997, and became a vice president in 2004. Royhab is a trustee on the Ohio Coalition for Open Government.

During his years with Scripps Howard Newspapers, Royhab served as an investigative reporter for The Cleveland Press and Cincinnati Post; chief of the Ohio bureau in Columbus; assistant managing editor of the Washington bureau; managing editor of the El Paso Herald-Post in Texas, and assistant managing editor of The Pittsburgh Press.
