The Paul Miller Fellows meet monthly from September through June to visit federal agencies, talk with experts and veteran reporters and discuss the intricacies of the federal government and how to report on it.
Along with being an orientation to the nation's capital, a Paul Miller Fellowship has become a “rite of passage” for journalists coming to Washington and membership in a group of elite journalists.
"My first day in D.C., my training went like this, 'There's your desk.' I can't imagine how I would have survived this town without this program."
- Barb Barrett, The News & Observer (Raleigh), 2006-2007 Paul Miller Fellow
The Paul Miller Fellowships were founded by the Freedom Forum in September 1986 to honor the former chairman and president of both Gannett and the Associated Press. The Freedom Forum turned over the Paul Miller program to the National Press Foundation in 2000. The program is underwritten by the Gannett Foundation, the Freedom Forum, the Triad Foundation, and the NPF Program Fund.
